crap doesnt eat anything
Grass Carp eat grass, but they are a different species of fish. The common carp, the fish you are wanting to catch, eat berries such as cherry tomatoes along with bread, corn, worms, and stuff like that. Dough baits work very well also. Use a 1/8 or 1/6 OZ weight to sit the bait on the bottom. Carp are bottom feeders. Just cast it out in the middle of no where (no joke) and let it sit. Watch your line. When it gets tight set your hook.
i hooked a grass carp on corn but the knot was bad and it broke of
I knew an old man who caught carp with big red soaked dough balls. Carp are bottom-feeders to my knowledge. Check out this site to help you.

Without knowing where your from or what type of carp you are after I may be giving the wrong advice.
I Australia we are plagued by European carp. They are a pest and destroy our rivers, and they don’t even taste any good. But they are great sport and make good fertilizer.
To catch them I’d use light line and a small hook suspended below a float. The length of the leader will depend on the depth of the water, I would try to suspend it just above a weed bed. Use a small split shot sinker if the bait is very light.
As for bait almost anything will work if it is small enough. Try bread, corn, dough, pieces of worm or peeled yabby tails, maggots, whatever you can think of that will fit in there little mouths
